A used turbocharger first has to be identified correctly and assessed as a suitable exchange core. After disassembly, all components go through a detailed cleaning process to remove carbon deposits, burnt oil residue and contamination built up inside the turbo over time. Proper cleaning is critical during turbocharger reconditioning, because even small amounts of contamination can quickly damage a freshly rebuilt unit once oil flow is restored.

Once cleaned, the main components are inspected for wear, cracks, heat damage and dimensional issues. This includes the turbine housing, compressor housing, shaft and wheel assembly, bearing housing, variable vane system and actuator components where fitted. Some faults are immediately visible, while others only become apparent once the unit has been fully stripped and measured correctly.

Any worn or damaged service items are replaced as part of the remanufacturing process. Depending on the application and condition of the unit, this may include bearings, seals, piston rings, thrust components, fasteners and other precision parts that no longer meet specification. Components that cannot be restored to the required standard are replaced entirely.

The rotating assembly is then balanced using specialist balancing equipment to help ensure smooth operation at high shaft speeds. Correct balancing is essential for reliability, helping reduce vibration, bearing wear and premature failure once the turbocharger is back in service.

Incorrect calibration can lead to poor performance, fault codes, overboost, underboost or limp mode issues even when the turbo itself is mechanically sound.
