Remanufactured vs brand new turbochargers comparison

When a turbo fails, the choice is usually between a brand new unit and a remanufactured replacement turbo. The right option depends on the vehicle, price, availability and the quality of the turbo being supplied.

For many everyday repairs, a properly remanufactured turbo is the more practical choice. It is often much cheaper than a genuine new OE turbo, usually available sooner, and reduces waste by reusing suitable original housings. When rebuilt correctly, matched to the vehicle and fitted properly, it should perform and last like a new unit.

The key is the standard of the rebuild. A professionally remanufactured turbo is not the same as a used second-hand part, a quick clean-up, or a cheap new copy sold online.

What is a remanufactured turbocharger?

A remanufactured turbocharger is built from an original turbo core that has been stripped, cleaned, inspected, rebuilt, balanced and tested before being supplied again.

It is not the same as a used turbo. A used unit is normally removed from another vehicle and sold as it is, with unknown mileage, oil history, wear and actuator condition.

A proper remanufactured turbocharger goes through a full rebuild process. At Turboworks, most units receive a new CHRA and new seals. The CHRA is the centre core assembly of the turbo and contains the main rotating components.

The hot side and cold side housings are reused only when they are in suitable condition. They are cleaned, sandblasted and inspected before the unit is rebuilt. If a housing or other component is not suitable for reuse, it is replaced.

This means the turbo is not simply cleaned up and put back in a box. The internal working parts are renewed or replaced, while suitable original housings are reused to keep correct fitment and reduce unnecessary waste.

Turbocharger actuator calibration and inspection during remanufacturing

What is a remanufactured turbocharger?

Yes, when it has been remanufactured properly.

The main internal working parts are renewed, including the CHRA and seals on most units. The turbo is then balanced, checked and set up for the correct application. When the actuator is calibrated properly, the unit should deliver the same boost control, response and performance as a new turbo.

At Turboworks, our turbocharger services include cleaning, inspection, new CHRA and seals on most units, balancing, high-speed VSR balancing, electronic actuator calibration and vacuum actuator testing where required.

We mainly use Melett components, with other OE-quality parts used depending on the turbocharger.

When built correctly, matched to the correct vehicle and fitted properly, a remanufactured turbo should perform and last the same as a new one.

Why choose a remanufactured turbo?

For most customers, the main advantage is cost without giving up performance.

A genuine brand new OE turbo can be expensive, especially on modern diesel engines, electronic actuator units, twin-turbo systems and newer applications. In many cases, a properly remanufactured turbocharger is around half the price of a genuine new unit, and often still cheaper than a quality new aftermarket option.

It also makes practical sense. Many remanufactured turbos are available from stock on an exchange basis, which can reduce vehicle downtime for both private customers and garages.

A good remanufactured turbo gives you correct fitment, reliable boost control, less waste, specialist support and warranty cover of up to 24 months.

Brand new turbocharger option compared with remanufactured turbo

When does a brand new turbo make sense?

A brand new turbo can still be the right choice if the price is close to a remanufactured unit, if the customer specifically wants a genuine new OE turbo, or if the correct remanufactured option is not available.

In practice, it comes down to the vehicle, part number, availability and price. If new and remanufactured are close in cost, new may be worth choosing. If the price gap is large, a properly remanufactured turbo usually gives the same result for much less money.

Be careful with cheap new turbochargers

“Brand new” does not always mean OE-quality.

A new turbo could be a genuine OE unit, a quality aftermarket replacement, or a cheap copy. They may all be described as new, but they are not built to the same standard.

A genuine new OE turbo is usually a good product, but often expensive. A quality aftermarket turbo from a trusted supplier can also be a good option. The risk is with very cheap online copies, especially when the price looks too good to be true.

Poor-quality turbos can suffer from weak materials, poor balancing, incorrect actuator setup, oil leaks, noise, boost control faults and early failure.

At Turboworks, we regularly see customers who have bought the wrong turbo online, received poor advice, or had a poor rebuild done elsewhere. In some cases, the unit fits physically but is not correct for the engine, power output or actuator setup.

That is why the supplier matters. A turbocharger needs to be correctly identified, built properly and matched to the vehicle - not just bought from the cheapest listing.

Quick comparison

OptionMain BenefitWhat to check

Remanufactured turbo

Correct fitment, strong value and fast availability

Rebuilt by a specialist, balanced, tested and correctly matched

Genuine brand new OE turbo

Original new unit

Usually the most expensive option

Quality new aftermarket turbo

New part from a trusted supplier

Brand quality, warranty and correct application

Cheap new copy

Low upfront price

Higher risk of poor fitment, poor calibration and early failure

Used second-hand turbo

Cheap to buy

Unknown mileage, condition, oil history and actuator wear

For most everyday repairs, a properly remanufactured OE-core turbo gives the best overall balance of price, reliability, availability and fitment.

Before you order

Whether you choose remanufactured or brand new, correct identification is essential.

In most cases, Turboworks can identify the correct turbocharger from the vehicle registration.

Occasionally, some engines have more than one turbo version. If that applies, we may ask for the part number, OE number or clear photos of your existing turbo.

Checking this before dispatch helps make sure the right unit is supplied first time.

Fitting still matters

A good turbo still needs the right fitting conditions.

Before fitting a replacement, the vehicle should be checked for common causes of turbo failure such as oil supply issues, oil contamination, blocked DPF, boost leaks, actuator faults and stored fault codes.

New or remanufactured, any turbo can fail early if the original fault is still there. For more detail, see our technical information hub or our guide to common turbo failure reasons.

Replacement turbocharger being checked before fitting

So, which is best?

For most everyday repairs, a properly remanufactured turbo offers the best balance of cost, performance and availability.

When built correctly, matched to the vehicle and fitted properly, it should perform and last like a new unit.

Brand new still makes sense when the price is close, a new OE unit is preferred, or the correct remanufactured option is not available. The one to avoid is the very cheap “new” copy - new does not always mean better.

At Turboworks, we supply both new and remanufactured turbos and can help confirm the correct option before you order.

Are remanufactured turbos reliable?

Yes. When rebuilt properly with quality parts, correct balancing and actuator calibration, a remanufactured turbo should perform reliably like a new unit.

Is a remanufactured turbo the same as a used turbo?

No. A used turbo is sold as removed. A remanufactured turbo is rebuilt, balanced and tested before supply.

How long does a remanufactured turbo last?

When the internal parts are renewed, balanced correctly and fitted properly, a remanufactured turbo should have the same service life as a new unit.

Is a cheap new turbo better than a remanufactured turbo?

Not always. A properly remanufactured OE-core turbo is often a safer choice than a cheap new copy with unknown build quality.

Does Turboworks supply remanufactured turbos to garages?

Yes. Turboworks supplies remanufactured and brand new turbos to garages, mechanics and trade customers across the UK, as well as private vehicle owners.
